How to Not Piss Off Your Roommate

By Uloop Archives on December 4, 2012

Roommate problems–it’s bound to happen whether your roommate is your best friend or someone you just met. If you want to get along with your roommate, follow this simple guide:

1) Do not do anything to disturb your roommate’s sleeping or studying. It may seem like no big deal when you’re playing your music out loud, forgetting to shut your alarm off, leaving your lights on, or talking on the phone or skype calling in the very room your roommate is trying to sleep or study, but it is when your roommate may end up with only three hours of sleep and has to go to his or her early morning class. Instead, listen to your music through your headphones, write a note to yourself to shut your alarm off, or leave the room to talk to your friends or family. You and your roommate could also work out a deal and have study times at the library.

2) Never use your roommate’s stuff without permission and always make sure you ask before using. Under no circumstances should you be touching other people’s belongings without asking because that’s just disrespectful. Don’t think, “I’ll just replace it and everything will be okay,” because, trust me, it won’t. Save the drama and hassle and just don’t touch.

3) Tell your roommate when you’re bringing your significant other over. No one wants to walk into their room and see their butt-naked roommate with another butt-naked stranger.

4) Remember to clean up your mess and make sure your stuff doesn’t get over to your roommate’s side or block the pathways. Try setting clean up days for the both of you as well. You always want a healthy environment, and I’m pretty sure your roommate would like that too.

5) Don’t always stay in your room. Come on, it’s San Francisco, there are a lot of things you can do here like going to some of your school events or vising Fisherman’s Wharf. Your roommate may want to have some privacy from time to time and you should respect that.

6) Never talk behind your roommate’s back. Instead of complaining about your roommate to other people, why not work things with your roommate? It will save the tears, stress, and drama. And if you both are unable to work out an agreement, talk to your RA and maybe he or she can help resolve the conflict.
