Solutions to Laptop Problems: College Edition

By Carelyn Tiburcio on April 14, 2016

Things happen. Literally out of nowhere. We don’t expect things to happen but they just do. As a college student, I have noticed that many things have happened with my laptop. About three weeks ago, my laptop fell for the very first time. It was horrific because it wouldn’t turn on. But, things turned out really well towards the end. I have learned not to panic when situations with my computer occur.

As a college student, you are bound to have a problem with your laptop. If you do, don’t panic! That’s why I wrote this article! So here are some possible problems that you could have with your laptop and easy solutions to fixing them.

Liquid spills on your laptop

You’re studying at the library with your laptop and you have Starbucks on the side. You suddenly reach over and SPLASH! Part of your chai tea latte spills on your keyboard. You would probably be panicking right now, but just know that the solution is very easy to fix.

First of all, turn off your computer. Grab a couple of napkins and dry your keyboard by patting down on it. A better option is to use a small towel. When you get home, use a blow-dryer to make sure to dry all the liquid inside. This method worked the best for me. Also, turn your laptop upside down so that that liquid can fall out. If none of these methods work for your laptop, (this option is only for the tech savvy people) try taking apart your laptop and letting the pieces dry separately.

Your laptop falls

You forgot to zip up your case and BAM! Your laptop hit the floor. The day my Mac fell was the night that I couldn’t sleep. It was the worst feeling in the world because it wouldn’t turn on. I had essays, pictures, and much more on there. Of course some laptops work after you drop them. You’re lucky if your laptop does that.

If your laptop does not work after dropping it, then try looking up some options online on your phone or using someone else’s computer. This does help and a lot of times the solution is easier than it seems. If none of the online solutions work, then go to a computer specialist. The day my Mac fell, I went to the Apple store. Apple has a one-year warranty and I took advantage of that. I got my laptop shipped off and it was fixed for free!

If you’re someone who drops things or spills things a lot, then I recommend getting protection for your laptop. Cases can easily be found in store or online. Keyboard covers are also a good option.

Also, plan on getting insurance for your laptop. Even if you know you would never let your laptop fall, still get insurance! You never know if one day your laptop stops working out of nowhere. Trying to fix a laptop without insurance can be very expensive.

Memory, memory, memory! I cannot stress this enough. Make sure you save your most important files on a flash drive. As a Mac owner, I personally do not trust iCloud. I make sure to keep a backup of my pictures on a flash drive.

Take care of your laptop! If anything happens, make sure not to panic because the solution is way easier than it seems.
