New York City Versus Los Angeles Style Profiles

By Kristen Peuvion on October 30, 2014

In the United States, we basically have two main fashion cities that we look at as fashion trendsetters.

These two cities are none other than New York City and Los Angeles, both on opposite sides of the country and both with their own unique styles. It’s safe to say that New York and Los Angeles are fashion opposites. The styles you see in these cities are like night and day.

Let’s take a closer look at how their styles compare.

New York City Style Profile

New York is known as the fashion capital of the country. More so than Los Angeles, New York has the reputation of high end fashion and couture. That reputation is solidified in the fact that NYC is the only U.S. city with its own fashion week.

People from all over the world, not just the country, look to New York City to find out what the newest trends for next season will be.

That being said, this city’s style is all about high end luxury items. People know their designers and love wearing them. A lot of New Yorkers have expensive taste, and when you’re in a city that prides itself on high fashion, how could you not?

Not only do New Yorkers love their designer labels, but they also have an affinity for the newest trends. New York City style is groundbreaking and boundary pushing. Fashion starts here, so many times people are wearing trends we’ve never seen before, but will probably be sold in stores everywhere a few months later.

NYC style is all about being innovative and not being afraid to try something new. Fashionistas in this city don’t follow trends, they start them and they aren’t afraid to take risks.

New York City is also known as the city that never sleeps and people having confident and uptight attitudes and the city’s style reflects that. NYC style has the reputation of being modern and conservative, with clean cut lines and sophisticated, tailored silhouettes.

You won’t find a lot of people in this city roaming around looking like they got dressed in the dark.

NYC is a huge metropolitan area compared to LA’s beachy location, so you’ll find that there’s more of a sense of sophistication. People in this city spend their days working in office buildings so their clothes match that.

It’s not hard to find a man or woman in a perfectly tailored business suit during the day, but even at night you’ll find that people’s styles have a sense of sophistication that you won’t necessarily find in LA style.

Overall, people in New York City take their fashion very seriously. They have a lot of pride in their fashion sense, and rightly so. Known for being one of the fashion capitals of the world, NYC fashion is all about sophistication, trendsetting and high end couture.

Los Angeles Style Profile

Los Angeles can easily be described as having the complete opposite style profile when compared to New York City. While NYC is known for its sophistication and modernity, LA is more known for its laid-back, casual style.

The beach is only minutes away when you’re in LA and so peoples’ attitudes are a lot less uptight than that of a New Yorker. The style there is absolutely a reflection of this.

It’s less common to find an LA dweller rocking a well-tailored suit and more likely to find them wearing a fabulously unstructured boho style dress. It’s all about the laid-back, beachy style in this city.

While Los Angeles is also known for being a fashion hub in the U.S., it’s not associated with super high end items quite like NYC. People here aren’t necessarily on the cutting edge of what is going to be the latest trend as much as they are in New York, so even though the style is super trendy in LA, it really can’t compare to New York.

In my mind, New York is the intimidating all-star sibling who gets all the attention, while LA sits in the shadows but is equally just as fabulous and glamorous.

Los Angeles will never quite measure up to New York City in terms of high end fashion and trendsetting, but that’s not to say that it doesn’t shine all on its own.

Los Angeles is the mecca of Hollywood stars who all have their own unique styles that we emulate in our everyday lives. New York may have the hot shot designers and fashion shows, but LA gives us the Hollywood stars who show us how to make all of that high end couture wearable.

I think LA gives us a more realistic, applicable take on fashion.

Even though these two cities are completely different when it comes to style, New York City and Los Angeles are both fashion powerhouses. The unique styles we see from both cities are equally fashionable and we look to them to start all of the latest trends.
